Renting a heavy-duty forklift: the practical guide for loads from 8 to 18 tonnes
Anyone who has to set down a 12-tonne machine transformer onto foundation bolts with millimetre precision has a problem that no standard counterbalance forklift solves. At 5 tonnes it is the end for classic industrial forklifts – above that begins a class of its own with its own physics, its own logistics and its own risks.
This guide is aimed at logistics and production planners who need to know which technical parameters really matter before the machine stands on the construction site. The most common planning error is not the load capacity that is too small, but the wrongly estimated load centre distance. What looks like 18 tonnes on the data sheet is, in practice, often only 12.

Load centre and residual load capacity: why 18 tonnes is not always 18 tonnes
The nominal load capacity on the type plate applies to one single reference point – the load centre distance (LCD), which is defined by the manufacturer. For heavy-duty forklifts, this value typically lies between 600 mm and 1,200 mm. As soon as the actual load has a longer centre-of-gravity distance, the load capacity drops, in part drastically.
The principle in practice:

Kalmar DCG 180-6T: 18,000 kg nominal load capacity at an LCD of 600 mm. Designed for compact, very heavy loads – steel blocks, press moulds, tools.

Kalmar DCG 160-12T: 16,000 kg nominal load capacity at an LCD of 1,200 mm. Designed for large-format loads such as precast concrete elements or coils, which are in any case further away from the lifting mast.
Anyone who orders an 18 t forklift because a 14-tonne load is to be moved can be badly surprised if the load has its centre of gravity 1,500 mm away from the mast. The residual load capacity at the mast lift results from the load chart of the machine – a curve that shows how much load may still be safely moved at which LCD and which lifting height.
Before every enquiry, the rental company needs three values:

Load weight: the actual gross weight including transport frame and slinging gear.

Load centre distance: measured from the fork back to the centre of the load mass. For irregular loads, the most unfavourable point applies.

Maximum lifting height in the load case: because the residual load capacity decreases with increasing lifting height.

Indoor use: why electric heavy-duty forklifts are no longer a niche
In production halls with active production – for example in automotive manufacturing, pharmaceutical production or food processing – diesel heavy-duty forklifts reach real limits. Not primarily legal ones, but operational ones.
Three drivers for electric heavy load in the hall:

Emission protection: even modern Stage V diesels with a particulate filter (DPF) burden the hall air with nitrogen oxides and CO₂. In multi-shift operation without a gate opening, the values quickly rise above the internal company limit values. Ventilation systems have to be retrofitted – outsourcing to an electric forklift is usually cheaper.

Noise reduction: a diesel heavy-duty forklift generates a permanent 80 to 90 dB in load operation. Electric drives lie 10 to 15 dB below that. In halls with concentration tasks or permanent staff traffic, this is a factor relevant to occupational safety (LärmVibrationsArbSchV).

Floor protection: electric heavy-duty forklifts are delivered as standard with light, abrasion-free (non-marking) tyres. On coated industrial floors – epoxy resin, lithium silicate – this prevents black tyre marks that cost more in cleaning than the rental-price difference.

The EP EFL 1002 is a 10-tonne electric counterbalance forklift with 5,000 mm lifting height, designed for pure hall use. Lithium-ion drive, interim charging possible, no gas or fuel handling, no exhaust values. For three-shift operations, the only forklift in the heavy-load segment that runs through without a break or conversion.
Important to know: the selection of electric heavy-duty forklifts beyond 10 tonnes is limited across the entire market. At higher load capacities, diesel with a Stage V filter and controlled hall ventilation is the viable route, or the task is redistributed to a heavy-duty telehandler.
Logistics before the logistics: what the forklift transfers to the hall
An 18-tonne forklift itself weighs around 25 to 30 tonnes even when empty. With a load it is 43 to 48 tonnes total weight. Before the machine is even delivered, three points must be clarified:
Point 1: floor load capacity
The point load per wheel is stated in the machine data sheet – for a loaded 16 t forklift it typically lies between 12 and 18 tonnes per front wheel. Industrial floors in existing halls are often designed for 5 to 8 t/m²; special heavy-load surfaces manage 15 t/m² and more. Point 2: works gate and traffic routes
Heavy-duty forklifts are wide. The Kalmar DCG 180-6T measures around 2.5 metres external width, other models up to 2.8 metres. Works gates under 3 metres become a bottleneck. The overall height with a retracted lifting mast is 3.2 to 3.5 metres – relevant for hall passages and gate openings. Turning circle: typically 4 to 5 metres, for heavy loads rather 5.5 to 6 metres. On works premises with narrow aisles, this is the dimension that decides usability.
Point 3: delivery with a heavy-load low-loader
The transport of a 25-tonne forklift is itself a logistics project. Heavy-load low-loaders, often with a special permit for the transport route, are the only option. Accessories and attachments: what further reduces the residual load capacity – and why it is nonetheless necessary
Every attachment shifts the load centre of gravity forwards and reduces the residual load capacity. The data sheet for the forklift without an attachment is no longer meaningful at that moment.
The most important attachments in heavy-load operation:

Hydraulic sideshift: standard on modern heavy-duty forklifts. Allows the lateral shifting of the forks by typically ±100 mm without a steering movement. Indispensable for the precise positioning of press moulds or machine foundations.

Hydraulic fork positioner: changes the fork spacing from the driver's seat. With changing load formats (coils, large pallets, machine frames), this considerably shortens set-up times.

Fork tine extensions: standard forks on 8 t forklifts lie between 1,200 and 1,500 mm, on 16 to 18 t models between 1,800 and 2,500 mm. Longer forks are needed for coils, large pallets or long goods – with reduced residual load capacity, because the load centre of gravity inevitably lies further from the mast.

Load guard: mandatory for loose or shape-unstable loads (steel bundles, bundles) that could tip backwards.

Special fork tine dimensions: for steel blocks, machine foundations or special loads, a special fork geometry can be more sensible than an attachment.
Before the rental enquiry comes the question: which load, which format, which pick-up geometry? From these three answers results the right combination of forklift and attachment – not the other way round.
When the load goes above 18 tonnes: the heavy-duty telehandler as an alternative
At load capacities beyond 18 tonnes or at lifting heights over 6 metres, the classic counterbalance forklift leaves its sensible area of use. The Manitou MHT 10200 in the Luibl rental fleet is formally a heavy-duty telehandler, not a counterbalance forklift – with 20,000 kg load capacity, a significantly higher reach and the possibility of being converted with a basket or winch.
When the heavy-duty telehandler is the better choice:

Lifting heights over 6 metres: counterbalance-forklift triplex masts end at around 7 m lifting height; above that, stability becomes the restriction.

Reach in front of the machine: when the load has to be lifted over an obstacle (scaffolding, container, works wall), the telescope is unbeatable.

Tandem lift for very heavy loads: two coordinated heavy-duty telehandlers with radio remote control replace, in many cases, the 200 t mobile crane – more flexible and, once the load is set down, immediately usable for other tasks.

Rental conditions, UVV and availability
Daily rental, weekly rental, long-term rental: daily rentals for 10-tonne models start at around 200 euros net; weekly and monthly rates are proportionally significantly cheaper. For long-term rental from six months, Luibl calculates individual project prices including UVV inspection, annual maintenance and in part also a refuelling service. UVV inspection: every forklift in the Luibl rental fleet leaves the depot with a valid inspection sticker in accordance with DGUV Vorschrift 68 (industrial trucks) and DGUV Grundsatz 308-001. For long-term rental, Luibl takes over the annual repeat inspection within the rental period. Operator training: DGUV Vorschrift 68 requires a written assignment and proven capability of the driving personnel. On request, Luibl offers operator training for heavy-duty forklifts – including the specific hazard situation arising from load-centre-of-gravity shifting and residual load capacity. Response times and service: in the event of technical faults during the rental period, Luibl provides a service technician directly on site on request. FAQ: renting a heavy-duty forklift
- Which load capacity do I actually need?
The nominal load capacity of the forklift must be higher than the load weight – how much higher depends on the load centre distance. Rule of thumb: at an LCD of 600 mm, a reserve of 10–15% over the load weight is sufficient. At an LCD of 1,200 mm and more, 25–30% reserve is sensible. A binding statement is provided only by the load chart of the specific machine.
- Do I need a special forklift licence for a heavy-duty forklift?
The forklift licence in accordance with DGUV Grundsatz 308-001 fundamentally entitles the holder to operate all industrial trucks with a driver's seat or stand. For heavy-duty forklifts, the employer additionally requires machine-specific instruction by the rental company or an authorised trainer. This instruction is subject to documentation.
- Can a heavy-duty forklift be operated in the hall with diesel?
Fundamentally yes, provided the hall ventilation is adequately dimensioned and the Stage V machine is fitted with a particulate filter (DPF). For multi-shift operation or halls with active production, electric is the more robust choice. Before use, a risk assessment in accordance with the BetrSichV should be carried out.
- How quickly can Luibl deliver?

- Is there a rental price without a driver? With a driver?
The standard is rental without a driver – the hirer provides qualified operating personnel.
