The pallet truck closes the gap between the simple low-lift pallet truck (purely horizontal transport) and the classic electric forklift. It lifts loads up to mast height – emission-free, agile, and with significantly less space requirement than a ride-on forklift.

The concrete benefits for warehousing and logistics:

• Emission-free indoor operation: The electric drive with LiFePO4 technology works without exhaust fumes – mandatory in food logistics, pharmaceutical production, retail, and enclosed halls without forced ventilation.

• Manoeuvrability in narrow aisles: The compact dimensions allow work in racking aisles where a ride-on forklift would find no room to manoeuvre. Decisive in high-bay warehouses and dense block stacking.

• No forklift licence in the classic sense, but instruction is mandatory: For pedestrian-controlled industrial trucks such as the pallet truck, DGUV Grundsatz 308-001 requires documented operational instruction. Full forklift licence training is not mandatory – more on that below.

The decision for a pallet truck is usually a decision against the space requirement and emissions of a ride-on forklift – while achieving a higher lift than a low-lift pallet truck.

The focus is on modern units with lithium-ion batteries – replacing the older lead-acid batteries with their long charging times and the maintenance overhead of water-cooled cells.

Standard pallet trucks for classic pallet handling

For level warehouse floors and typical pallet logistics (Euro-pallets, mesh boxes), the standard pallet truck is the first choice. Load capacity 1,000 to 1,600 kg, lift height 3 to 3.5 metres. Operation is via the tiller – ergonomically shaped, with fingertip control for lifting, lowering, and direction of travel.

Typical applications: interim storage in production environments, order picking in warehouses, loading and unloading of small delivery vans with load-bed height.

Pallet trucks with initial lift for ramps and uneven surfaces

On truck ramps, at thresholds at loading doors, or with slight unevenness outdoors, a standard pallet truck is not always sufficient. Models with initial lift additionally raise the load rollers on the fork carriage before the mast engages. This lifts the pallet clear of the ground along its full length – the unit clears thresholds and ramp edges without the load rollers touching down.

This is the decisive difference from the standard unit: where the operating environment is not completely level, the initial lift is what makes the application possible in the first place.

Electric pallet trucks up to 2 tonnes load capacity

For heavier loads and multi-shift operation, Luibl offers electric pallet trucks with up to 2,000 kg load capacity and lift heights over 5 metres. These units work with a triplex mast and full free lift – important in halls with limited ceiling height. The lithium-ion battery allows opportunity charging during breaks; the unit remains ready for use throughout shift operation without a battery change.

One example model from the rental fleet is the EP ES series – li-ion based, with an integrated charger, designed for continuous use in intralogistics.

Four parameters determine which model is right for your application.

Load capacity and load centre: The rated load capacity always applies to a defined load centre – usually 500 or 600 mm. With longer or asymmetrical loads, the residual load capacity is reduced. The load chart on the unit shows the exact values for each lift height and load centre position. Particularly relevant: at maximum lift height, the permissible load drops noticeably below the rated value – an aspect operators must take into account when storing goods high up in racking.

Lift height and mast type: Three designs are common on the market. Simplex (single-section mast) allows lift heights up to approx. 3 m without telescoping. Duplex (two-section telescopic mast, sometimes with free lift) reaches 3.5 to 4.5 m. Triplex (three-section mast with full free lift) lifts over 5 m – at the same overall height when retracted. Free lift is the distance the fork carriage can travel upward without the mast itself extending – decisive in halls with low doorways or ceiling beams.

Overall height when retracted: Often overlooked, but it determines whether the unit fits through doorways and under ceiling beams. With duplex and triplex masts featuring free lift, overall height remains manageable even at high lift heights. Before renting: measure the doorway height at the site.

Turning radius and aisle width: Pallet trucks are guided by the operator (pedestrian-controlled). The turning radius is significantly smaller than that of a ride-on forklift – this allows work in aisles from around 2.2 m wide. For even narrower aisles, narrow-aisle variants with three-way stacker design are available from Luibl on request.

Battery and charging: Lithium-ion batteries are standard at Luibl. Advantages: opportunity charging without capacity loss, no off-gassing (no separate charging room required), longer service life than lead-acid. The integrated charger runs on a standard 230V household outlet – no heavy-current installation required at the site. A full charge is sufficient for a full shift depending on demand; opportunity charging during breaks significantly extends operating time.

• Retail and home improvement stores: Shelf replenishment during opening hours, quiet and emission-free. Pallet trucks with initial lift clear door thresholds between the stockroom and the sales floor.

• Food and beverage logistics: HACCP-compliant warehouse logistics with fully electric units. No diesel forklifts permitted.

• Pharmaceutical and cleanroom logistics: Emission-free operation and low noise levels are mandatory here.

• Production and interim storage: Delivery to production lines, return transport of empty pallets, storage and retrieval in adjoining racking areas.

• Order picking and dispatch handling: Combined with low-lift pallet trucks, the pallet truck forms the backbone of intralogistics in e-commerce and distribution.

• Truck unloading in city centres: Where there is no manoeuvring space for a ride-on forklift, the pallet truck unloads directly from the truck onto the shop floor – a classic use case in Vienna or Berlin city centres, but equally in Passau's old town logistics.

What's included in the rental:

• Safety inspection under DGUV Vorschrift 68: All units are inspected before handover. The inspection sticker is visibly attached. For long-term rentals, Luibl renews the inspection during the ongoing rental period.

• Integrated charger: The charger is built into the unit and works from a standard 230V outlet. No special installation required on site.

• Handover report: Written documentation of the machine's condition on delivery and return – protects both parties in the event of damage.

• Technician service on request: In case of technical faults or operating questions, a service technician is dispatched promptly. Included in the service contract for long-term rentals.

• Young rental fleet: Units are typically under 3 to 5 years old. That means current technology (LiFePO4 battery, ergonomic tiller, modern safety features) and a low failure rate.
