Anyone looking to hire an aerial work platform will encounter different names for the same technology depending on sector and region. What matters for the selection is not the name but the design type — you should nevertheless be able to place the terms:

• Aerial work platform is the umbrella term for all mobile lifting devices that safely raise personnel and material to height.
• Mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) is the standard-compliant designation. DIN EN 280 refers to mobile elevating work platforms, internationally abbreviated as MEWP.
• Boom lift is the expression common in the trades, among local authorities and utility companies — usually meaning truck-mounted platforms and telescopic boom lifts with a long reach.
• Access platform is used synonymously in everyday site language.
• Lifting platform is also heard colloquially. In technical use, however, it refers to the stationary vehicle lift in a workshop — that is, precisely not the powered access technology discussed here. Anyone wanting to hire a boom lift almost always means a machine with a long reach: high up, far across, often at changing locations. Which configuration is the right one is decided by three questions — how often the location changes, what the ground will bear and whether obstacles are in the way.

Truck-mounted platforms are the classic boom lift on a chassis. They drive themselves between working locations, are set up on outriggers within minutes and require no separate transport. That pays off as soon as several points are visited in a single day — typical for street lighting, utility networks, advertising installations and municipal maintenance.

Articulating boom lifts are the boom lift for everything that cannot be reached freely from below. The articulated boom guides the platform over pipework, canopies or machinery. Available with electric, diesel and hybrid drive up to over 48 m working height.

Telescopic boom lifts deliver the greatest straight reach. Where height and outreach count and the path to the working point is clear, they are the fastest and most stable solution — with us up to 57 m working height.

Spider lifts are the boom lift for sensitive ground. Low unladen weight, variable outriggers and a narrow undercarriage that fits through standard doorways — in demand on parquet, tiles, green areas and in heritage conservation.

What does it cost to hire a boom lift?

The rate follows the same factors as for any aerial work platform: configuration, working height, side reach, drive and hire period. Two particularities apply to boom lifts. First, with truck-mounted configurations the machine transport is not required, but a driving licence of the appropriate category is. Second, side outreach shifts the permissible platform load — two machines with the same working height can be very differently usable in practice.

1. Can the working point be reached freely from below? Yes — then a scissor lift is enough; it lifts purely vertically and brings the largest platform. No, there are pipes, canopies or machines in the way — then you need the articulated boom of an articulating boom lift.

2. How far do you have to go sideways? If straight reach at great height is what counts, the telescopic boom lift is the fastest and most stable solution. If the platform has to be offset laterally and guided around corners, it stays with the articulating boom lift.

3. What will the ground bear? Sensitive floors, parquet, tiles or green areas call for a spider lift with low unladen weight and variable outriggers. On smooth hall floors, electric machines with non-marking tyres work; in shell construction and on rough terrain, diesel all-wheel versions.

4. Does the working location change several times a day? Then a truck-mounted platform drives itself between the points and separate transport is not required. If the machine stays in one place for days, a self-propelled platform is usually more economical.

5. How tight is the access? If doors, gates or lifts have to be passed, narrow-gauge models from 0.76 m overall width come into question — or a mast lift, which is light, narrow and quick to set up.

A note from practice: the working height is around two metres above the platform height. Anyone working at 12 m height therefore needs a machine with 10 m platform height. Also add up personnel, tools and material — with two fitters and tools, 350 to 450 kg is realistic.

What determines the hire price

• Design type and working height: a compact electric scissor lift for 8 m indoor work is in a completely different class from a telescopic boom lift with 57 m working height. Within a design type, the rate rises with working height, reach and capacity.
• Drive: electric, diesel and hybrid machines differ in acquisition and upkeep — and therefore in hire price. Rough terrain all-wheel machines are above comparable indoor machines.
• Hire period: daily, weekly and monthly rates are staggered. The longer the term, the lower the calculated daily rate. From several months, long-term hire with its own terms is generally the more economical option.
• Transport: delivery and collection are shown separately from the machine hire. They depend on the distance from our Passau location, the transport weight and the accessibility of the site.
• Additional services: machinery breakdown insurance, attachments and on-site familiarisation are calculated separately.
