Rent Heavy-Duty Forklifts – Powerhouses for Industry and Handling

When loads over 8 tonnes need to be moved on a regular basis, a standard front forklift is no longer enough. The line into heavy-duty forklift territory is crossed where standard industrial forklifts (typically up to 5 tonnes load capacity) reach the limit of their rated capacity. Projects in the metal industry, precast concrete production, steel processing or port handling regularly work with loads between 8 and 18 tonnes – here a heavy-duty forklift is mandatory, not optional.

Typical fields of application:

• Metal and steel construction: Loading steel beams, coils, prefabricated parts and semi-finished products. With these goods, the load centre of gravity is often positioned well ahead of the fork tip – which reduces residual capacity and calls for a correspondingly rated machine.

• Precast concrete and building materials industry: Transport of precast concrete elements, natural stone blocks, and heavy pallets. Frequently on unpaved yard surfaces with slopes and access routes.

• Port and handling terminals: Loading and unloading trucks, railcars and containers. In the second handling row, heavy-duty forklifts often take over from the reach stacker.

• Machine tool manufacturing and heavy industry: In-plant transport of machine assemblies, tooling and press components. Operation typically takes place on shop floors with defined floor load capacity.

• Recycling and timber industry: Handling steel scrap, tree trunks and paper bales. High demands from continuous operation and coarse, bulky loads.

The decision to rent a heavy-duty forklift depends on more than just weight. Load centre of gravity, lift height, fork length and the floor load capacity at the site also determine which machine fits the job.

The Entry Class: 8 to 10 Tonnes

Hyundai 80D-9 (8 t diesel): Diesel power is the classic choice for outdoor yards and mixed indoor/outdoor operation. With a fork length from 6,000 mm and 8 tonnes rated capacity, the Hyundai 80D-9 covers typical heavy-duty tasks in steel trading and at recycling yards.

Kalmar ECF 80-9 (8 t electric): For indoor operation with emission requirements – for example in the food industry, pharmaceutical production or paper processing. The electric drive runs emission-free and noticeably quieter than comparable diesel units. 8 tonnes load capacity at 3,450 mm lift height.

EP EFL 1002 (10 t electric): The next step up in the electric range, with 10 tonnes load capacity and 5,000 mm lift height. Demand for electric heavy-duty forklifts is rising noticeably – both for emissions reasons and because of lower operating costs in continuous use.

The Heavy Hitters: 16 to 33 Tonnes

Hyundai 160D-9 (16 t diesel): 16 tonnes load capacity at 4,500 mm lift height. Typical use in plant handling, container loading, or heavy-duty pallets outdoors. Robust diesel drivetrain designed for continuous operation.

Kalmar DCG 160-12T (16 t diesel): Kalmar is regarded as the world market leader in heavy-duty forklifts. The DCG 160-12T operates with 16 tonnes load capacity at 4,500 mm lift height, with a 1,200 mm load centre distance – relevant for precast concrete elements and large-format loads. A rear camera, ergonomic workstation and optimised cylinder layout improve forward visibility.

Kalmar DCG 180-6T (18 t diesel): The flagship rental model: 18 tonnes at 4,500 mm lift height, 600 mm load centre. The shorter load centre distance shows this machine is designed for compact, very heavy loads – steel blocks, press moulds, tooling. Despite its high rated capacity, the dimensions remain manageable; the turning radius allows use in plant halls with normal traffic areas.

For even higher loads: Luibl also rents the Manitou MHT 10200 heavy-duty telehandler with 20 tonnes load capacity. This machine is formally not a front forklift but belongs to the telehandler category, though it also reaches greater lift heights and extended reach. The MHT is the first choice whenever classic front-forklift geometry isn't enough.

Choosing a heavy-duty forklift comes down to five technical parameters. Anyone who doesn't clarify them properly risks a machine that ends up either oversized or – more dangerously – undersized for the job site.

Rated capacity and load centre: The load capacity stated on the nameplate always applies to a defined load centre distance – usually 600 mm or 1,200 mm. If the load is picked up further forward, residual capacity can drop drastically. Precast concrete elements, steel plates and bulky machine assemblies often have significantly longer load centres. What counts here is the machine's load diagram – not the capacity figure in the brochure.

Lift height and mast height: Besides the actual lift height (the maximum distance from the ground to the fork level), the mast's collapsed height is also relevant. Door heights, hall roof structures and passageways between production areas define the upper limit. A free-lift mast allows lifting without mast extension – important in halls with limited ceiling height.

Fork length: Standard forks on 8 t forklifts range from 1,200–1,500 mm, while 16–18 t models use 1,800–2,500 mm. Longer forks are necessary for coils, large pallets and long goods. Luibl also offers matching accessories for rent: fork extensions, load spikes, load guards.

Drive type: Diesel delivers torque and continuous performance for outdoor use. Electric is mandatory in emission-sensitive environments and shows its strengths in multi-shift indoor operation. For mixed operation, the industry also offers bi-energy models – Luibl's heavy-duty portfolio currently offers diesel and electric variants.

Ground conditions: An 18-tonne machine weighs around 25 to 30 tonnes even empty. Add the load on top of that. The floor load capacity at the site – hall, ramp, outdoor yard – must be checked before delivery. Luibl assists with this assessment; the limit values can be found in the machine's data sheet under point load per wheel.

Transporting a heavy-duty forklift is a logistics project in its own right. With unladen weights of 15 to over 25 tonnes and overall widths beyond 2.5 metres, only heavy-duty low-loaders come into question – often requiring special permits for the transport route.

The delivery area covers: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary and other European countries. For sites with port or plant access – such as Hamburg, Duisburg, Bremen, or the southern German industrial regions around Passau, Munich and Nuremberg – delivery typically takes place within a few working days.

During the rental period:

• On-site technical support: If needed, Luibl provides a service technician directly at the job site or plant. This minimises downtime caused by operating errors or technical issues.

• Long-term rental terms: For projects running over several months, the accident-prevention regulation (UVV) inspection and annual maintenance are included in the contract.

• One point of contact: For heavy-duty forklifts, telehandlers, aerial work platforms and standard forklifts – no parallel contracts with different rental companies.

As industrial trucks, heavy-duty forklifts are subject to DGUV Regulation 68 (safety and health protection when using industrial trucks) as well as the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV). This creates specific obligations for operators and renters.

Annual UVV inspection: All Luibl rental equipment is inspected to FEM 4.004, focusing on the hydraulic system, mast, lifting gear, brakes and safety devices. The inspection sticker is clearly displayed on every machine. For long-term rentals, Luibl renews the UVV inspection during the ongoing rental period.

Daily driver check: A visual and functional inspection is required before every shift – tyres, oil level, hydraulic lines, lighting, warning devices. Luibl provides the corresponding checklist at handover.

Handover briefing: For complex machines – particularly from 16 tonnes load capacity upward – Luibl staff can provide a personal briefing on request. This covers the load diagram, operating concept, safety devices and the specifics of the particular model.

Workplace-specific risk assessment: Under BetrSichV, responsibility for the risk assessment lies with the operator at the site of use. The rental company supplies the technical documentation; the site-specific assessment – covering matters such as floor load capacity, travel routes and load pickup – must be carried out by the operating business itself.
