When obstacles have to be bridged, awkward areas reached or working heights beyond 20 metres are required, the articulating boom lift is the tool of choice. Luibl Rental & Sales hires out articulating boom lifts with working heights from 10 to over 48 metres — available with electric, diesel and hybrid drive, delivered by our own low-loader fleet throughout Germany and across Europe. On site you will hear knuckle boom lift, articulated boom lift or knuckle-boom platform used for the same machine — all of them mean the mobile elevating work platform with an articulated boom described here. How the articulating boom lift differs from scissor, telescopic and mast lifts is explained in the overview Rent a lifting platform; all designs in the fleet are listed under rent aerial work platforms.

What is an articulating boom lift?

An articulating boom lift combines two principles: an articulated boom built around a knuckle joint and a telescopic boom section for additional reach. The result is the so-called up-and-over effect: the platform is first raised vertically, then tipped over an obstacle and finally extended telescopically — positioned exactly at the working point. This makes the articulating boom lift the first choice around pipework, building projections, industrial racking or structures that telescopic boom lifts and scissor lifts cannot get past. That knuckle joint is also the reason for the name knuckle boom lift — articulating boom lift hire is one of the most requested areas of powered access at Luibl.

Articulating boom lift vs. telescopic boom lift: what is the difference?

Telescopic boom lifts work with a linear boom and are ideal for long, straight reach over open ground. Articulating boom lifts are the right choice as soon as obstacles are in the way or the working area has to be approached from the side. They can reach the same working point from different angles — a clear advantage for facade work or inside confined industrial buildings. For purely vertical work on level ground, scissor lifts are often the more cost-efficient alternative.

Which articulating boom lift fits? Four questions for the selection

Within this design type, four figures decide which machine is right:

  1. How high and how far to the side? With this design type, side reach often matters more than working height alone — it determines how far from the set-up position you can work without repositioning the machine. The more weight in the platform, the lower the permissible outreach.

  2. Indoors or outdoors? For halls, production areas and noise-sensitive environments the electric articulating boom lift is the choice — locally emission-free and quiet. Outdoors and on unprepared ground the diesel version with all-wheel drive takes over.

  3. Do conditions change during the project? Then the hybrid articulating boom lift combines both: diesel for travelling across rough terrain, electric for locally emission-free work inside the building.

  4. Do you need the articulated boom at all? If the working point can be reached freely from below, a scissor lift is usually the more cost-efficient solution. If only straight reach at height counts, the telescopic boom lift is the faster machine.

Machines in this class reach unladen weights of up to 21 tonnes. Clarify site access, unloading space and the permissible point load at the set-up position in advance — this prevents the most common cause of delays on site.

Our fleet: electric, diesel and hybrid up to 48 m

Luibl Rental works with machines from Genie, JLG, Manitou, Magni and Niftylift. The fleet covers working heights from 10 to 48.15 metres and platform capacities from 200 to 450 kg.

Electric articulating boom lifts for indoor applications

Electric boom lifts operate locally emission-free and quietly — ideal for factories, logistics centres or public buildings. Non-marking tyres protect sensitive floors. Typical models: Manitou 120 AETJ-C 3D (11.95 m), Manitou 200 ATJ e (20.00 m), Genie Z40/23 N RJ (14.32 m).

Diesel articulating boom lifts for difficult terrain

Diesel models with 4x4 all-wheel drive and oscillating axle handle gradients of up to 45 % and difficult ground. Typical models: Manitou 160 ATJ (16.02 m), Genie ZX-135/70 (43.15 m), JLG 1500AJP (48.15 m, 450 kg platform capacity).

Hybrid articulating boom lifts for flexible deployment

Hybrid models combine electric and diesel drive — usable indoors and outdoors without conversion. Typical models: Niftylift HR 21 Hybrid (20.80 m), Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid (28.00 m), Genie Z60/37FE (20.16 m).

Articulating boom lifts compared: height, side reach and platform capacity

With an articulating boom lift, working height alone tells you little. What matters is the interplay of working height, side reach and permissible platform capacity. The table shows a selection from our rental fleet – from the compact indoor machine to the largest articulating boom lift in our fleet.

How to read the values:

  • Working height is the platform height plus 2 metres – i.e. the height at which a person standing in the platform works.
  • Side reach is the maximum outreach according to the manufacturer. It is usually not achieved at full height; what counts for your working point is the outreach diagram of the respective model.
  • Platform capacity covers everything in the platform: persons, tools and material combined.

Within the same height class, the machines differ considerably. At around 20 metres working height, side reach ranges from 11.15 m (Genie Z60/37FE) to 13.00 m (Niftylift HR 21 Hybrid). If you need to lift more than 250 kg, you will end up with the Genie Z45FE (300 kg), the Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid (280 kg) or the JLG 1500AJP (450 kg).

Applications: where the articulating boom lift plays to its strengths

The articulating boom lift has the advantage whenever the machine cannot be positioned directly below the working point. Typical scenarios:

Facades and building envelope

Canopies, balconies, bay windows or planting in front of the building prevent a lift from moving straight up to the facade. The articulated boom reaches over these obstacles and brings the platform close to the wall – for facade installation, window connections, sealing, cleaning or refurbishment. Where scaffolding does not pay off for short sections of work, the articulating boom lift is often the faster and more economical solution.

Plant engineering and industry

In production halls, pipe racks, cable trays, ventilation ducts and machinery stand close together. What counts here is that the platform can be guided over and between plant components. Electric and hybrid models work locally emission-free, and non-marking tyres protect the hall floor – important for maintenance, conversion and installation work during ongoing operations.

Steel, hall and stadium construction

When installing roof girders, grandstand structures or lighting and sound equipment, great working heights meet lateral offset. On unpaved construction sites, diesel models with all-wheel drive take over; on finished hall floors, the electric or hybrid version does the job.

Maintenance and facility management

Inspection, cleaning and repair of roofs, gutters, lighting and building services often take place in courtyards or at narrow access routes. This is where compact electric machines from 10.89 m working height play to their strengths.

Events and trade fairs

For setting up and dismantling rigging, lighting and stage technology in halls, quiet electric models with zero local emissions are the usual choice.

Application example: maintenance on a pipe rack during ongoing operations

A typical industrial scenario shows how the selection works in practice. It is an example of deployment planning, not an individual customer case.

The starting point: Brackets and insulation are to be replaced on a pipe rack at a height of 14 metres. The pipe rack runs above a traffic aisle, with plant components to the left and right. The machine can only be set up with a lateral offset of around seven metres. Two people work with hand tools, and the hall remains in operation.

The selection in four steps:

  1. Height: 14 m working point plus a reserve – so machines from around 16 m working height come into question.
  2. Side reach: A good seven metres of offset at 14 m height rules out the compact indoor machines. Whether a model can cover that distance at this height is only shown by its outreach diagram – the maximum outreach usually does not apply at full height.
  3. Platform capacity: Two people with tools need a platform capacity well above 200 kg.
  4. Environment: A hall in ongoing operation – so electric or hybrid with non-marking tyres.

The result: An electric articulating boom lift of the 17 m class such as the Manitou 170 AETJ-L (16.90 m working height, 9.43 m side reach, 230 kg platform capacity) comes into question; with more reserve in height and offset, the Manitou 200 ATJ e (20.00 m, 11.57 m). If heavy components also have to go into the platform, the choice shifts to a model with a higher platform capacity. The Genie Z45FE carries 300 kg, but at 6.94 m it does not reach far enough to the side – in that case the set-up position has to move closer to the pipe rack, or a larger machine is needed.

Clarified before delivery: Access route and clearance height, load-bearing capacity of the hall floor at the set-up position and cordoning off the work area. With this information you receive a quote that fits the task – not just the working height.

Delivery by our own low-loader fleet – across Germany and Europe

Luibl Rental operates its own low-loader transport fleet. That means no dependency on third-party hauliers, direct coordination of delivery date and set-up position, and delivery to your site as scheduled. Transporting articulating boom lifts with unladen weights of up to 21 tonnes requires specialised equipment — at Luibl that is standard. Whether short-term or long-term hire, delivery covers Germany and large parts of Europe. Over 200 locations in the network secure regional availability.

Operation and qualification

Operating a mobile elevating work platform requires proof of competence in accordance with DGUV Principle 308-008. The operator must be instructed in the handling of the specific machine, both in theory and in practice. All Luibl machines leave the depot after a statutory safety inspection (UVV) and come with complete technical documentation. On request we can put you in touch with training partners for the operator certificate.

What does it cost to hire an articulating boom lift?

Articulating boom lifts are technically more complex than purely vertical platforms — accordingly, the hire rate spreads across a wider range. These factors determine it:

  • Working height and side reach: Between a 12 m electric machine for indoor work and a 48 m diesel articulating boom lift outdoors lie several classes. Side reach often carries more weight than height alone.
  • Drive: electric for locally emission-free indoor work, diesel with all-wheel drive for rough terrain, hybrid for jobs that demand both.
  • Hire period: daily, weekly and monthly rates are staggered; for longer projects, long-term hire with its own terms is worthwhile.
  • Transport: machines in this class reach unladen weights of up to 21 tonnes and need specialised transport equipment. Delivery is handled by our own low-loader fleet from Passau and is shown separately from the machine hire.
  • Additional services: machinery breakdown insurance and on-site familiarisation are calculated separately.

Included are an inspected machine with a valid statutory safety inspection (UVV), maintenance during the hire period and technical advice on the selection. With details of working height, required side reach, ground conditions, hire period and site location you will receive an itemised quote.

FAQs: Articulating Boom Lift Hire

chevronDown

What does an articulating boom lift cost per day?

The rental price depends on the working height, drive type and rental period. Compact electric models are significantly cheaper than large diesel machines over 40 m. Request an individual quote – we will give you specific daily and weekly prices.

Which articulating boom lift is suitable for indoor use?

For indoor use, electric models with non-marking tyres, low dead weight and low ground pressure are recommended – e.g. Manitou 120 AETJ-C 3D or Genie Z33/18.

What is the difference between an articulating boom lift and a telescopic boom lift?

Articulating boom lifts reach over obstacles (up-and-over), telescopic boom lifts offer greater straight-line reach. Articulating telescopic boom lifts combine both advantages.

How heavy is an articulating boom lift?

The dead weight varies: compact electric models weigh 3–5 tonnes, large diesel machines can reach 18–22 tonnes. The floor load and load-bearing capacity of the ground must be checked in advance.

How is an articulating boom lift delivered?

Via our own low-loader fleet from Passau, across Germany and into large parts of Europe. Machines in this class reach unladen weights of up to 21 tonnes and accordingly need specialised transport equipment. Because we do not depend on third-party hauliers, we agree the delivery date and set-up position directly with you. Please clarify site access and unloading space in advance.

Is an articulating boom lift suitable for indoor use?

Yes, with electric drive. These models operate locally emission-free and quietly and are therefore approved for enclosed halls, production areas and noise-sensitive environments. Also pay attention to non-marking tyres if the hall floor is sensitive, and to the permissible point load — machines in this class carry considerable unladen weight.

What side reach does an articulating boom lift achieve?

With this design type, side reach is often more important than working height alone — it determines how far from the set-up position you can work without repositioning the machine. How far it reaches in an individual case depends on the model and on the platform load: the more weight in the platform, the lower the permissible outreach. Tell us the working point, the set-up position and the load, and we will select the appropriate machine.

Is an articulating boom lift also called a knuckle boom lift?

Yes. Knuckle boom lift, articulated boom lift and knuckle-boom work platform are common designations for the same machine. The name comes from the articulated knuckle boom, which distinguishes it from the purely linear telescopic boom lift.

What does the up-and-over effect mean?

That is the name for the ability of an articulating boom lift to work over an obstacle. The articulated boom first guides the platform vertically upwards, then tips it over the obstacle and extends the telescopic section to the target point. This lets you reach working positions behind pipework, canopies or racking that remain inaccessible to rigid telescopic boom lifts and to scissor lifts.

How much weight can go into the platform of an articulating boom lift?

Depending on the model, the permissible platform capacity in our rental fleet ranges from 200 to 450 kg. Most machines up to around 20 m working height are designed for 200 to 250 kg; higher capacities are offered, for example, by the Genie Z45FE (300 kg), the Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid (280 kg) and the JLG 1500AJP (450 kg). Platform capacity includes persons, tools and material combined. The number of persons permitted is stated on the rating plate on the platform. Tell us the weight that needs to go up – we will select a model with sufficient reserve.

Which articulating boom lift has the greatest reach?

The largest articulating boom lift in our rental fleet is the JLG 1500AJP with 48.15 m working height and 23.55 m side reach at up to 450 kg platform capacity. In the class around 28 m, the Magni DAB28RT (19.40 m) and the Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid (19.00 m) offer particularly generous side reach. If the reach of an articulating boom lift is not sufficient, we will advise you on telescopic boom lifts with up to 56.90 m working height.

What is the difference between working height and platform height?

Platform height is the height of the platform floor above ground. By convention, the working height of mobile elevating work platforms is 2 metres higher – this corresponds to the height at which a person standing in the platform works. A machine with 20 m working height therefore raises the platform floor to around 18 m. Always compare quotes on the basis of the same figure, otherwise you may quickly find yourself two metres short on site.

Do I need a licence for an articulating boom lift?

No vehicle driving licence, but proof of operator qualification in accordance with DGUV Principle 308-008 (aerial work platform certificate). This demonstrates that the operator has been trained in both theory and practice.
