Telehandler Attachments – The Quick-Change System as an Investment Multiplier
A telehandler without attachments is a lifting machine. With the right range of attachments, it becomes a crane, an aerial work platform, an excavator, a shovel, and a sweeper – on the same chassis, within the same working day. The hydraulic quick-coupler is not an accessory here, but system architecture: it defines how many specialized machines a single telehandler can replace in your fleet.
The Quick-Change System: How It Works and What It Means Legally
Technical Operating Principle
The hydraulic quick-coupler sits at the boom head. Two hydraulic cylinders tension a locking profile that engages the standardized mount of every compatible attachment. Attachments can be changed without leaving the cab, without tools, in under 60 seconds. Hydraulic connections couple automatically on locking; electrical connectors for scales or control systems do too.
CE Conformity of the Combination: The Overlooked Legal Point
This is where the most common compliance mistake in telehandler operation occurs: CE conformity is required not only for the carrier machine and not only for the attachment – but for the combination of both. Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC treats the carrier machine and the attachment as a single overall machine as soon as they work together.
Consequences for the buyer:

Third-party attachments without manufacturer approval for the specific carrier machine can void the CE conformity of the overall system

The statutory inspection under DGUV 308-005 covers all attachments in use; unlisted attachments will be flagged during inspection

The Attachment Range in Detail
Pallet Fork – Basic Equipment
Standard version with a fixed fork width for Euro pallets (800 × 1,200 mm). Decisive at purchase: the residual load capacity after the attachment's own weight. A 4-tonne fork itself weighs 180 – 320 kg; this weight is deducted from the carrier machine's load chart.
Variants:
Fork positioner (hydraulic): Fork width infinitely adjustable from the cab; essential for changing pallet formats and industrial applications
Wide fork: For oversized loads such as formwork elements, steel beams, pipe bundles
Side shift: Horizontal shifting of the load without moving the machine; precision positioning in warehouses and during assembly work
Load Hook and Winch – The Crane Function
A load hook with a freely suspended load turns the telehandler into a lifting appliance under DGUV Grundsatz 309-003. A winch is also available for controlled lowering and lifting out of pits or shafts.
Technical requirements for operation:
Load must be attached using lifting accessories (chains, round slings) in accordance with DGUV Regel 100-500
A freely suspended load must not be travelled with – the machine must remain stationary
Winch attachments require their own statutory inspection under DGUV Grundsatz 309-003 in addition to the telehandler inspection
Work Platform – MEWP Function with 360° Slew
The work platform, CE-approved to EN 280, turns the telehandler into an aerial work platform. Typical load capacity 200 – 350 kg (1–2 persons + tools). On the rotating telehandler, the platform rotates with the upper carriage – full 360° positioning without repositioning the machine.
Critical legal point: Operation with a work platform is fully subject to the requirements of EN 280 – including the obligation for an annual statutory inspection as a MEWP, operator training in accordance with ISO 18878, and operating instructions for carrying personnel. The operator must reflect this explicitly in their risk assessment under BetrSichV.
Bucket – Earthmoving and Material Handling
Tipping bucket (standard): For sand, gravel, soil, and demolition rubble; volume 0.3 – 1.2 m³ depending on model
High-tip bucket: Empties over obstacles and into high-sided containers; tipping height up to 3.5 m above ground
Grab bucket: For lumpy material such as stones, tree stumps, and demolition debris; hydraulically closing
Bucket with integrated weighing technology: For recycling, landfills, and bulk material intake with billing accuracy
Concrete Skip and Mortar Bucket
For concreting on hard-to-reach ceiling sections and in shaft structures. Capacity 0.3 – 1.5 m³. Emptied via a slide gate, controlled from the cab or by pull cord. An alternative to a stationary crane for small quantities and frequent position changes.
Clamp Fork and Pipe Grab
For cylindrical loads: concrete pipes, steel pipes, tree trunks, coils. Clamping jaws close hydraulically; the load hangs in the clamp without lifting accessories. Advantage over a load hook: no rigger required, faster handling, more precise positioning.
Sweeper and Snow Clearing
Sweeper attachments with a hydraulically driven brush unit for construction site access roads, yards, and open areas. Working width 1.5 – 2.5 m. A snow plough blade is available as a counterpart for winter operation.
Residual Value Relevance: Why the Attachment Set Affects Resale Price
Telehandlers with a complete, manufacturer-compliant attachment set achieve 15 – 25 % higher resale prices on the used market than standalone machines without accessories. The reason: the buyer takes over a ready-to-use system with documented CE conformity – and does not need to source additional attachments or check compatibility.
For depreciation planning, this means: attachments can be capitalized as independent assets and are depreciated separately from the carrier machine (German BMF depreciation table: tools and fixtures, 5 years straight-line). At resale, they increase the residual value of the overall package disproportionately.
