Here's a common misunderstanding: not every compact aerial platform is a mast lift.

Mast Lift (Vertical)
Pure vertical lift with no outreach. Works straight up from directly above the base. Ideal for point-specific tasks and indoor use. Examples: JLG Toucan 12E, Haulotte Star 10.

Articulated Boom Lift with Obstacle Clearance
A mast arm with a rotating upper boom. Allows outreach — important when obstacles need to be worked around. Example: Manitou VJR 100 with 345° slew. Needs a bit more space but offers more flexibility.

For high-bay racking or ceiling cable work, you'll usually need the pure mast lift. For façades or work around obstacles (poles, cabling), the articulated boom is the better choice.

IPAF/PAL Card:

Step 5: Return
