Whether a service trench in the backyard, drainage on the company premises or excavation for a foundation – the compact construction class solves tasks for which a large crawler excavator would simply be too unwieldy. Anyone who has such work only occasionally is better off hiring than buying: no capital tied up, no maintenance responsibility, no parking-space requirement. This guide shows what really counts when renting a mini excavator.

The industry typically understands „mini excavator“ to mean crawler excavators up to around 6 tonnes operating weight. The class starts at a good 1 tonne – some manufacturers build even smaller machines – and merges fluidly into the range of compact excavators. The decisive feature is not the weight alone, but transportability: a mini excavator up to about 3.5 tonnes can be moved with a standard car trailer, without a heavy-goods transport being necessary. Beyond this, genuine mini excavators usually have a track undercarriage with an adjustable track width. This makes it possible to drive through a normal garden gate (from approx. 75 cm width) – an aspect that, on many projects, decides between feasibility and failure.

When renting mini excavators at Luibl, two weight classes are in focus:

1.8-tonne class (Yanmar SV18):

The most compact model in the rental programme. Thanks to its narrow dimensions, it fits through tight accesses that remain closed for heavier machines. Monoblock slewing boom, good ground clearance, all-wheel system with all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering. Typical uses: garden design, drainage work, service trenches on private properties.

3.5-tonne class (Bobcat E35):

More digging force and reach depth than the 1.8-tonne variant, but still compact enough for tight construction sites and transportable with a trailer. All-wheel system available, good ground clearance for outdoor use. Areas of use: road and path construction, foundation work, sewer work. For heavier earthworks projects – civil engineering, demolition, large construction sites – Luibl offers crawler excavators up to 30 tonnes (Doosan). This class no longer falls under the term mini excavator, but can be enquired about in the same rental programme.

The rental price when hiring a mini excavator depends on three factors: machine type, rental duration and delivery distance.

Daily rentals for mini excavators in the 1.8- to 3.5-tonne class start in the lower three-digit range. An exact figure without knowledge of the delivery location and the specific rental duration would be unserious – regional transport costs and utilisation situations vary too much.

Weekly rentals are noticeably cheaper than seven individual days, because Luibl calculates the transport costs only once. For projects lasting more than two to three days, the weekly rental almost always pays off.

The choice of the right machine depends less on the wish list than on the real conditions on site:

Access to the place of use: what passage width does the narrowest point have? Under 90 cm? Then the 1.8-tonne class is often the only option. Are there steps or high thresholds? A narrow-gauge track undercarriage with high ground clearance is then important. ** Digging depth and slewing radius:** the 1.8-tonne class reaches digging depths of about 1.7 to 2 m. The 3.5-tonne class goes deeper. For depth work from 3 m, a larger machine is more sensible.

Ground: on soft or uneven ground (garden, field, unsecured slope), track undercarriages work more stably than wheel drives. The models in the Luibl rental programme are without exception fitted with a track undercarriage.

Transport: can you move the mini excavator yourself with a trailer, or should Luibl deliver by low-loader? Up to 3.5 tonnes, own transport with a suitable trailer and a correspondingly approved towing vehicle is possible. For operating a mini excavator the following applies: there is no driving-licence requirement in the sense of road-traffic law for the excavator itself. However, anyone who operates an excavator on company premises or a commercial construction site is subject to the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV) as well as the relevant DGUV sets of rules. DGUV Regel 100-500 requires that excavator operators are adequately qualified and instructed. Anyone who works rarely or for the first time with a mini excavator should not skip the instruction. In addition: before every use on an area with underground lines (gas, water, electricity, telecommunications), a line enquiry must be obtained from the network operator. The rule of thumb in the industry: anyone who uses a machine more than 60% of the time should buy. Anyone who needs it occasionally or on a project basis rents. With the mini excavator, there is the added factor that maintenance, UVV inspections, spare parts and a parking space generate ongoing costs with your own machine that are often underestimated. A rented machine comes inspected and ready for use – and is collected again after the assignment. Anyone who works with a mini excavator fewer than 20 to 30 days per year is generally cheaper off with the hire.
