Rolling scaffolds: technology, use & selection at a glance
For many jobs at height, the rolling scaffold is the first choice — because it can be quickly assembled, moved and dismantled again. But depending on the project there are clear limits: heavy loads, outdoor terrain, wet floors or very large working heights call for other solutions. This guide explains what a rolling scaffold can achieve, where it reaches its limits and which alternatives are regularly the better choice in professional use.
What is a rolling scaffold?
A rolling scaffold — also called a mobile access tower or tower scaffold — is a mobile working scaffold made of aluminium or steel frames that is movable on steered castors. It is assembled without tools from standard frames, decks and diagonal braces and can be extended in segments in height.
The basic principle: attach frame, hook in deck, lock castors, begin work. Indoors on level floors this is practical. The decisive difference from a motorised work platform lies in the movement: the rolling scaffold is pushed by hand — without a motor, without hydraulics, without carrying persons during travel.
Distinction: a rolling scaffold is not a lifting device within the meaning of the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health. Persons may only use the assembled scaffold when it is standing and locked — never during movement.
Designs and types
Narrow rolling scaffold (0.75 m frame width)
The classic model for narrow corridors, stairwells and existing buildings. The narrow base enables use in areas that wider equipment cannot reach. Due to the small footprint, the maximum assembly height is limited — with a narrow frame it is the end at about 5–6 m working height.
Wide rolling scaffold (1.35 m frame width)
More stability, larger platform area, higher permissible working heights up to around 12 m (with outriggers). For hall work, interior façade refurbishments and stucco work.
Stair tower / stair scaffold
Rolling scaffold with an integrated stair access instead of a ladder. Mandatory for longer assignments with frequent climbing up and down — particularly relevant under DGUV Regel 100-500.
Folding scaffold / folding trestle
One-person scaffold for low working heights up to approx. 3 m. Not a genuine rolling scaffold in the technical sense, but the entry point for many tradespeople.

Interior fit-out and renovation
Painting work, ceiling plaster, drywall work, cladding — rolling scaffolds work well as long as the floor is level and load-bearing and the working height stays below 8–10 m. For private users and small trade businesses, the rolling scaffold is the standard aid in this area.
Hall maintenance and light upkeep
Light inspection, cable work, inspection of heating and ventilation systems — typical tasks in warehouses where the ceiling height is below 8–10 m and no heavy loads are moved.
Stairwell and narrow accesses
Narrow rolling scaffolds fit through standard doors (from 80 cm) and are suitable for stairwell refurbishments. Important: on intermediate landings, the scaffold must be completely dismantled and reassembled in the next section.
Limits of the rolling scaffold — and when a work platform is better
A rolling scaffold costs assembly and dismantling time. Every change of position requires releasing the lock, moving, locking again — with frequently changing positions this quickly adds up to hours. In addition there are legal limits:

Outdoor terrain and unpaved ground: castors on gravel, sand or wet concrete are not permitted. The scaffold must stand on a firm, level surface.

Working heights over 10–12 m: from here the effort for rolling scaffolds becomes disproportionate — both in assembly and in stability. Special high-rise scaffolds are costly and elaborate.

Carrying persons during travel: prohibited. Anyone working on the scaffold may not be carried along.

Heavy loads on the platform: payloads over 200 kg exceed the spectrum of all standard rolling scaffolds.

Assembling a rolling scaffold — what you must pay attention to
Anyone who assembles a rolling scaffold bears responsibility for stability. The most important points in accordance with DIN EN 1004 and DGUV Regel 100-500:

Check the ground: level, firm, load-bearing — no unevenness over 1 cm under the castors

FAQ
How high may a rolling scaffold be at most?
That depends on the frame width and the manufacturer's specification. Narrow frames (0.75 m) are usually approved up to approx. 6 m platform height, wide frames (1.35 m) up to approx. 10 m. With outriggers, the limits can be slightly increased.
May I stand on a rolling scaffold while it is being moved?
No. Moving with persons on the platform is prohibited under DIN EN 1004 and the DGUV set of rules. The scaffold must be locked before it is stepped on.
What is the difference between a rolling scaffold and a mobile access tower?
Both designate the same device. Mobile access tower (Fahrgerüst) is the older term used in standards; rolling scaffold (Rollgerüst) has become established in common usage.
Do I need instruction for a rolling scaffold?
For commercial use yes — the employer is obliged under the BetrSichV to instruct employees in safe use. For private individuals this does not apply, but the manufacturer's assembly instructions must be observed as binding.
Up to what working height is a small rolling scaffold still sensible?
For working heights up to 5–6 m, a narrow-frame rolling scaffold is practicable. From 7–8 m it is worth renting a mast lift — because of assembly time, stability and safety requirements.
