Hybrid articulating boom lifts combine two drive concepts in a single machine: emission-free, quiet electric operation for indoor use and the grid independence of a combustion engine for outdoor work. Projects that span both areas – a steel hall without a power connection in the morning, interior fit-out on a sensitive floor in the afternoon – can be covered with one machine, without switching equipment and without a second delivery. At Luibl, you rent hybrid articulating boom lifts with Europe-wide delivery from a network of more than 200 locations.

How the hybrid drive works

The hybrid drive combines a battery pack with a compact combustion generator (diesel or LPG). Both energy sources feed the same drivetrain – the operator selects the mode according to the site:

  • Electric mode for indoor use: All drive and lift functions run purely on battery power – emission-free, low-noise and with non-marking tyres. This makes the machine suitable for interior fit-out, in-service hall assembly, food-production and cleanroom environments, and sites with emission restrictions.

  • Hybrid mode for outdoor use: The combustion generator recharges the battery during operation and delivers the sustained power needed for rough terrain, gradients and long shifts. No mains connection on site is required.

On-board recharging eliminates the typical weakness of pure battery lifts – limited shift range without charging infrastructure. At the same time, emission-free operation is retained wherever it is required.

One machine instead of two – the commercial advantage

The commercial core of a hybrid lift is dual coverage: one machine replaces the otherwise usual combination of an electric and a diesel lift. This reduces cost and effort in several places.

  • No dual sourcing: One rental contract, one point of contact, one delivery date instead of two machines for the same construction phase.

  • One transport instead of two: Especially during mixed phases – shell construction followed by interior fit-out, or industrial halls from the build phase through to commissioning – the hybrid lift saves an entire logistics cycle.

  • One briefing: Operators work continuously on the same machine, regardless of the switch between indoor and outdoor use.

The hybrid variant is particularly worthwhile wherever indoor emission restrictions and a lack of outdoor power supply alternate within a single project.

Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid in the rental fleet

The reference model in the Luibl rental fleet is the Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid. It combines the reach of a classic articulating boom lift with the flexible drive concept:

  • Working height: up to 28 m

  • Outreach: up to approx. 19 m

  • Basket load: 280 kg – enough for two fitters plus tools and material, well above the usual 227 kg class

  • Outrigger-free: no stabilisers required, immediate start with no set-up time

  • Off-road capability: all-wheel drive for unpaved ground, combined with non-marking tyres for indoor operation

The three-dimensionally articulating jib and the rotating work basket make it possible to reach over obstacles at height and position the basket precisely – even in confined spaces and narrow access ways.

Up-and-over height and outreach

The advantage of the articulating geometry over a pure telescopic boom lies in the additional articulation point (riser) on the boom. It allows the basket to be guided over edges, railings or roof overhangs without repositioning the machine.

Two figures must be distinguished for selection:

Working height is the reach height of a person standing in the basket – platform height plus roughly 2 m. This figure appears in the rental quote.

Outreach (up-and-over reach) describes how far the basket can be guided sideways over an obstacle. On the HR 28 Hybrid this is up to approx. 19 m – the figure that determines suitability on complex façades and behind projecting structures.

The model's load chart is always decisive: it defines which basket load is permissible at which boom position. A site consultation based on the actual site geometry clarifies within a few minutes whether working height and outreach match the task.

Hybrid, diesel or electric – the right choice

The choice of drive depends on the site, the ground and the required reach height. As a guide:

  • Electric: Pure indoor assembly on level, firm ground up to approx. 28 m working height. Emission-free and quiet – the first choice for indoor use without off-road demands. To the electric category.

  • Diesel: Pure outdoor use, rough terrain and gradients, plus maximum reach heights up to 49 m. The choice for steel construction, bridge inspection and great heights. To the diesel category.

  • Hybrid: Mixed hall and outdoor phases, where indoor emission restrictions and outdoor grid independence come together within one project. One machine covers both requirements.

In borderline cases – for example predominantly indoor use with occasional outdoor work – a brief discussion with the rental team is the fastest route to the right machine.

Regulations, training and operator authorisation

Anyone operating a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) in Germany requires operator authorisation in accordance with DGUV Grundsatz 308-008. Theoretical instruction, practical training and a final proof of competence are mandatory; the employer's assignment must be issued in writing.

The internationally recognised operator credential is the PAL Card issued by IPAF (International Powered Access Federation), which many general contractors require – even where the DGUV proof is legally sufficient.

A daily visual and function check is mandatory before each use. The annual UVV inspection (statutory accident-prevention inspection) by a competent person is documented on delivery for Luibl rental equipment.
