When choosing a crane, what matters isn't the maximum capacity on the spec sheet, but the remaining lifting capacity at the radius you actually need. A 100-tonne crane only lifts its rated load at minimum radius – at a 30 m radius, often only a few tonnes remain. This is exactly where our consulting comes in: we check load weight, radius, hook height, and ground conditions against the machine's load charts.

Gross vs. Net Load: The Most Common Calculation Error

The load chart shows the gross load at the hook. From this you must subtract: the hook block, rigging equipment (chains, round slings, spreader beams), and, where applicable, the lattice extension or extended telescopic boom. What remains is the actual net load available for your component. On large lifts, this difference can amount to several tonnes – a factor our dispatch team always accounts for when recommending crane size.

This isn't a marketing formality but a safety-critical necessity: operating mobile cranes is governed by DGUV Vorschrift 52 ("Cranes"), and crane operator qualification follows DGUV Grundsatz 309-003 ("Selection, instruction, and proof of competence of crane operators").

Our crane operators know their machines inside out over years of experience, are trained in stability conditions, load moment limitation (LMB), and the rigging states of the Liebherr technology – and know exactly when a lift needs to be aborted. This is precisely the factor that prevents damage on critical lifts over existing structures, inside factory halls, or during tandem lifts.

Note: The annual accident-prevention regulations (UVV) inspection under DGUV Vorschrift 52 is standard practice across our entire crane fleet. Inspection reports are available on request for your project documentation.

Most delays on lift days aren't caused by the machine, but by inadequate preparation of the setup area. You should clarify these points before requesting a quote:

1. Setup area and ground conditions: A 100-t crane transfers point ground pressures of several hundred kN/m² under its outriggers. Paved surfaces, interlocking pavers, or uncompacted gravel rarely hold up without load-distribution mats. Where there's an underground garage or basement beneath the setup area, a structural assessment is mandatory.
2. Outrigger spread: Clarify whether the full outrigger base can be used. For restricted conditions, the Liebherr LTM series' VarioBase technology offers asymmetric outrigger support – with correspondingly reduced capacity on the restricted side.
3. Access: Height restrictions (bridges, gates), load-bearing capacity of access routes, and turning circles. Larger LTM models have axle loads that not every factory access road can handle.
4. Obstructions: Roof edges, parapets, canopies, overhead lines – every obstruction between the lift point and the set-down point must be factored into boom selection.
5. Permits: No-stopping zones, road closures, special-use permits for sidewalks, or swinging over neighboring properties. Depending on the municipality, these applications must be filed two to four weeks before the job.
6. Load data: Weight, center of gravity, rigging points of the component. For unknown loads, we calculate with safety margins – which pushes the required crane size up a class.

There are no flat rates for crane rental, for a simple reason: every lift is different. The calculation is made up of these building blocks:

• Lift duration and daily rate for the chosen crane size
• Transport to and from the nearest location (Luibl operates over 200 locations across Europe, which typically keeps travel distances short)
• Set-up time for rigging, ballasting, and dismantling (for larger cranes >150 t, a separate heavy-haul transport for counterweight and boom extensions is often required)
• Operating personnel (crane operator, plus a signaler for critical lifts if needed)
• Permits and escort vehicles for oversized and heavy transports
• Insurance for the rental period
