Forklift hire in Darmstadt: four urban areas, six forklift types
You can hire forklifts for Darmstadt from Luibl Rental, choosing from 53 models with 1,200 to 33,000 kg load capacity and up to 6.07 m lift height. Anyone who needs a forklift in Darmstadt rarely works under the same conditions twice: in the north, plant and laboratory rules apply; in the west, loading ramps and sandy ground; in the city centre, tight parking space; and in the east, hillsides on the edge of the Odenwald. So which forklift type is the right one? In Darmstadt, the answer depends first on the part of the city where the forklift will operate. That is why we organise our rental fleet by these four areas and deliver the right machine from our Passau location.
Forklift hire in Darmstadt: six forklift types for four urban areas
Each forklift type has its own focus in Darmstadt. The table shows all 53 forklifts and where in the city they typically work.
| Type | Models | Load capacity | Lift height | Focus in Darmstadt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric forklifts | 22 | 1,500–10,000 kg | 3.45–6.00 m | Production halls in the north, transshipment halls in the west, buildings on campus |
| High-lift pallet trucks | 6 | 1,200–2,000 kg | 2.70–5.50 m | Pallet warehouses, laboratory and plant rooms with narrow aisles |
| LPG forklifts | 3 | 1,800–7,000 kg | 5.04–6.03 m | Constant switching between hall and yard at loading ramps in Weiterstadt and Griesheim |
| Diesel forklifts | 11 | 3,000–10,000 kg | 4.50–6.00 m | Storage yards, builders' merchants, paved yards |
| Rough-terrain forklifts | 4 | 3,000–5,000 kg | 4.75–5.45 m | Building plots on sandy ground in the west, hillside construction sites in the east |
| Heavy-duty forklifts | 7 | 8,000–33,000 kg | 4.50–6.07 m | Plant and research construction, machinery relocations |
If the load has to go higher than 6.07 m, for example onto a roof or an upper floor, a telehandler is the better choice.
In northern Darmstadt, plants and research facilities need electric and heavy-duty forklifts
Between the industrial area in the north of the city, Arheilgen and Wixhausen, there are chemical and pharmaceutical plants, suppliers and research institutions. Here, the operator's rules determine which forklift is allowed on site, and the weight of the components determines the load capacity required.
On plant premises, electric forklifts run without exhaust emissions at the point of use
In production and storage halls of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, combustion-engine machines are often not permitted. Our 22 electric forklifts lift 1,500 to 10,000 kg and produce no exhaust emissions at the point of use. For areas with explosion protection, the plant operator alone decides whether and which machine may operate there. Clarify zones, access and site induction with the plant management before you send your enquiry. If the forklift will run over several shifts, also plan a charging point with a suitable connection.
In research and plant construction, heavy-duty forklifts carry up to 33,000 kg
Around the GSI Helmholtz Centre in Wixhausen, where the FAIR accelerator facility is being built, and at other laboratory and technical buildings, heavy individual components have to be moved: control cabinets, cooling units, machine crates. Our seven heavy-duty forklifts carry 8,000 to 33,000 kg; the most powerful model is the Kalmar DCG 330-12T. If the centre of gravity is off-centre or far forward on the forks, the residual capacity drops considerably. So tell us the weight, dimensions and centre of gravity of the load, and we will check the load chart before recommending a model.
In the west between Weiterstadt and Griesheim, loading ramps and sandy ground decide the forklift
West of the city, the plain of the Hessian Ried begins. Around the Darmstadt interchange of the A5 and A67 lie logistics and commercial areas, and further out new residential developments and building plots on sandy ground.
At loading ramps and in transshipment halls, electric and LPG forklifts do the work
In goods handling, what matters most is how often the forklift switches between hall and lorry. If it mainly operates indoors, an electric forklift is the rule. For racking aisles and pallet warehouses, a high-lift pallet truck with up to 5.50 m lift height complements it. If it constantly switches between yard and hall, our three LPG forklifts with 1,800 to 7,000 kg are an alternative. Whether an LPG forklift may operate in your hall is something you determine in your risk assessment, depending on ventilation and room size.
On sandy building ground, the rough-terrain forklift is the right type
The soil in the Ried is sandy and gives way under small, hard wheels. For building plots in Weiterstadt, Griesheim or Pfungstadt we rent out four rough-terrain forklifts: Manitou M30-4 and M50-4 as well as Ausa C300H and C500H x4 with 3,000 to 5,000 kg load capacity. On paved storage yards and courtyards, a diesel forklift with up to 10,000 kg is usually sufficient. After heavy rain, reassess travel routes and stacking areas before moving heavy loads.
In the city centre and on campus, floor space matters more than load capacity for a forklift
Around Luisenplatz, on the TU Darmstadt city centre campus and in districts such as the Martinsviertel, access roads are narrow and space is scarce. Here it is rarely about heavy loads, but about where the forklift is unloaded and where it is allowed to drive.
Inside buildings, door width, aisle width and floor load decide
For relocating laboratories, workshops or archives in university and administrative buildings, high-lift pallet trucks and compact electric forklifts are suitable. Check door widths, clearance heights and the permissible floor load in advance, because the forklift and load together put point loads on the slab and screed. Where the forklift has to cross ramps or thresholds inside the building, give us their dimensions.
On public land you need a permit from the city
If the transport vehicle or the forklift stands on the road or pavement, clarify with the City of Darmstadt which permit is required, for example a special use permit or a traffic management order. Allow lead time for this and tell us the access route so that we can plan the transport accordingly.
In the east and south on the edge of the Odenwald, forklifts drive on slopes with the load facing uphill
East of the city centre, the terrain rises towards the Odenwald, from the Mathildenhoehe via Bessungen to Eberstadt at the start of the Bergstrasse and into neighbouring towns such as Muehltal and Rossdorf. On construction sites on these slopes, different rules apply than on the plain.
When loaded, drive on a slope with the load facing uphill, i.e. forwards when going uphill and in reverse when going downhill, and never turn across the gradient. The permissible gradient is stated in the operating manual of the respective model. For unpaved hillside construction sites we recommend a rough-terrain forklift with four-wheel drive; on paved yards a diesel forklift is often sufficient. If the gradient becomes too steep or the load has to be lifted over an embankment or wall, a telehandler is the better choice.
Transport from Passau: around 450 km to Darmstadt
We deliver forklifts for Darmstadt from our Passau location. The route runs via the A3 past Regensburg, Nuremberg and Wuerzburg and covers around 450 km. We plan the transport using the delivery address, the available space and the time window of your site. Also tell us where unloading is possible and whether the access route has height or weight restrictions. The same applies to jobs in the surrounding area, for example in Weiterstadt, Griesheim, Pfungstadt, Muehltal, Rossdorf or Dieburg. If you need several machines on one site, we coordinate delivery and collection together.
Obligations when using a forklift in Darmstadt: qualification, authorisation, instruction
Anyone who uses a rented forklift assumes the obligations for drivers and operation as the operator.
Drivers need training and a written authorisation
Under DGUV Regulation 68 § 7, only persons who are at least 18 years old, suitable and trained, have proven their competence and have been authorised in writing may operate a forklift with a driver's seat or driver's platform. Training follows DGUV Principle 308-001. We can put you in touch with a certified training provider via our training through certified partners, free of charge and without obligation.
Risk assessment and instruction come before the first lift
Before operation, assess the hazards in accordance with BetrSichV § 3 (German Industrial Safety Regulation), for example travel routes, floor load, ventilation and traffic on site. Instruct the drivers in accordance with ArbSchG § 12 (German Occupational Safety and Health Act) and BetrSichV § 12 on the machine and the place of use. On plant premises, the operator's rules also apply.
