The industry sets the direction; you make the decision based on the load. If it weighs more or its centre of gravity is further forward than expected, choose the next stronger type. If the placing point is above 6.07 m or behind an edge, a telehandler lifts the load.

For narrow rack aisles and picking zones, six high-lift stackers with 1,200 to 2,000 kg capacity and 2.70 to 5.50 m lifting height are available. They do not replace the counterbalance forklift, but relieve it where only pallets are being restacked.
Gas forklifts when the machine shuttles between hall and loading yard
Wholesalers often load outside and store inside. For this there are three gas forklifts with 1,800 to 7,000 kg and 5.04 to 6.03 m lifting height. Whether a gas forklift may drive in your hall is determined in the risk assessment. Ventilation and hall size play the main role.

Ask the organiser first
Many trade fair companies only allow contract forwarders with their own forklifts to drive on their grounds. So check with Messe Dortmund or the organiser whether and under what conditions your own rental forklift may be used. The same applies to access, loading zones and set-up times.

The centre of gravity decides the residual capacity
The rated capacity only applies if the load's centre of gravity is at the intended distance from the fork carriage. Machines are rarely evenly weighted: motor, gearbox or tooling shift the centre of gravity forward or to the side, and the permissible load decreases. Send us the weight, dimensions and position of the centre of gravity, ideally with a sketch or manufacturer's drawing. We check the load chart and propose the right machine.
Check route, hall floor and door beforehand
A heavy-duty forklift brings its own weight and the load onto small wheel contact areas. Walk the route from the unloading point to the machine, measure doors and passages and ask about the permissible floor load of the hall. Covers of ducts and pits are often the weakest point.
Construction sites on Dortmund brownfield land: all-terrain forklifts for backfilled ground
Many new buildings in Dortmund are being built on former industrial land, for example around Phoenix West and Lake Phoenix or on parts of the Westfalenhuette site. Higher than 6.07 m: telehandler instead of forklift

As the operator of a rental forklift, you are responsible for ensuring that only suitable persons drive and that the site is safe.
Training, suitability and written authorisation
Under section 7 of DGUV Regulation 68, a forklift with a driver's seat or stand may only be driven by someone who is at least 18 years old, physically and mentally suitable, trained and authorised in writing by the employer. The basis of training is DGUV Principle 308-001. At handover we familiarise your staff with the specific machine. This familiarisation does not replace training.
Risk assessment for each site
Before use, you assess the hazards under section 3 of the Industrial Safety Regulation (BetrSichV).
