Aerial work platforms and construction machinery are needed in Zilina mainly where production never stops: in manufacturing and assembly halls that keep running while conversion, repair or retrofitting work goes on alongside. The city of around 82,000 inhabitants is home to a car plant and a dense cluster of suppliers, along with mechanical engineering and metalworking in the Vah valley. For the machine fleet this means locally emission-free drive, non-marking tyres, compact dimensions — and scheduling that follows cycle times and shutdown periods rather than construction timetables.

Combustion engines are not an option in an occupied hall. Exhaust fumes burden the hall air and the ventilation system, and in areas with paint shops, electronics assembly or test benches they are ruled out entirely. Tyres matter just as much: on coated industrial floors, hard tyres leave permanent marks, so non-marking tyres should be agreed explicitly when you enquire — as should the permissible floor loading, which is lower above ducts and pits. For spot maintenance in areas that remain in use — lighting, sensors, cable runs — mast lifts with 10.00 to 12.65 m are the least involved solution.

The difficult jobs are the ones where something stands beneath the work area that cannot be moved: conveyor belts, overhead conveyors, skid systems, robot cells, press lines. A scissor lift needs the floor space directly below it — and that space is occupied. This is where you use articulated boom lifts, which reach over the obstacle and back down into the working position. The electric version works at 10.89 to 28.00 m with 150 to 280 kg and is suitable for indoor use; where that is not enough, the range extends up to 48.15 m.

The second factor is time. Conversions run during shift changes, at weekends or in the works holiday period, and the window is fixed — which is why the machines belong on site before the shutdown begins, rather than being scheduled into the window itself. For hall structures and outdoor installations at greater heights, telescopic boom lifts with 14.00 to 56.90 m are available, and for narrow set-up areas spider lifts.

Outside the hall — yards, ancillary buildings, outdoor storage — the diesel scissor lifts are the more load-capable option with four-wheel drive.

When plant equipment is converted, the material flow is often the bottleneck rather than the working height. Telehandlers lift and place assemblies without setting up a crane: fixed-frame models with 4.30 to 18.80 m and 1.25 to 25 t, rotating models with 15.42 to 38.90 m for work all round. Inside the hall the same drive rule applies as for the platforms — which is what electric telehandlers with 5.85 to 30.00 m are for.

In the warehousing and dispatch areas of the supplier companies, forklifts from 3 to 16 t round out the range, as electric forklifts for indoor operation. For extension works and utility lines, excavators from 1.8 to 30 t are added.

Anyone operating a mobile elevating work platform in Slovakia works under a stricter regime than in Germany. Vyhlaska MPSVR SR 508/2009 Z. z. classifies power-driven mobile work platforms with a lifting height of more than 1.5 m as zdvihacie technicke zariadenie skupiny A and therefore as a vyhradene technicke zariadenie. Official inspections (uradne skusky, recurring as opakovane uradne skusky), special documentation duties and formal qualification requirements for the operating personnel apply. Added to this are NV SR 392/2006 Z. z. on the use of work equipment, the occupational safety act 124/2006 Z. z. and STN EN 280.

In a plant environment this has a consequence that goes beyond the paperwork: outside contractors working during ongoing operation must disclose their records to the plant — the inspection certificate for the machine, the qualification and instruction of the operators, and the risk assessment for the specific workplace. We supply the machine-side documents; the operator-side duties remain with you. Before every shift there is also the visual and function check — it can be passed on neither to the rental company nor to the plant operator.

Zilina lies where the D1 and the D3 meet, in the Vah valley between the Mala Fatra and the Kysuce highlands. That is favourable for delivery: heavy haulage reaches the industrial sites in the surrounding area without long stretches of country road, and moving machines between supplier locations in the valley takes only short hops. The topography nevertheless calls for attention. Plant access roads and ramps in the highlands have gradients, and the permissible travel and set-up inclination of an aerial work platform is smaller than people assume: on sloping surfaces you do not work, you only travel — and even that only within the manufacturer's specifications. Check the access gradient and the manoeuvring space in advance, especially at halls with a lowered docking level.
